Dear Village Pet Spa Customers,
Recently, there have been a lot of media reports about a “mystery” dog illness. We wanted to let you know how we’re responding to these reports.
What is the “mystery” dog illness?
Veterinarians describe the illness as a respiratory disease that can cause coughing, sneezing and lethargy. They say it can sometimes lead to pneumonia.
How does respiratory illness spread?
Given the respiratory nature of the disease, it is most likely spread through close contact and breathing in the same air of an infected animal.
What are the symptoms?
What are the steps we’re taking?
There are steps that we take to prevent the spread of illness including vaccinations and stringent cleaning protocols where we use the same cleaning and sanitizing products as some local vets. We require all pets to be up to date on their vaccines. We will turn away any dogs displaying symptoms or who are not current on their vaccines. We are also recommending pets be current with the Canine Influenza vaccine. Vaccines can lessen the severity of the illness; however, it may not prevent your pet from contracting all strains of bacteria or virus. We continue to make cleaning and sanitizing a priority throughout our facility and are taking heightened precautions. We have also been in contact with local veterinary offices and will continue to seek their guidance.
What if a pet becomes ill while boarding?
If your dog shows any signs of this infection while boarding with us, there are steps that our staff have been trained to take in order to minimize the spread. This includes isolating symptomatic dogs from groups as well as possibly relocating them to a different area within our facility and of course seeking appropriate medical care.
What are steps you can take to help in the prevention?
Keep your pet away from large groups of dogs where their vaccine or health status is unknown, such as dog parks. Be sure your pet is up to date on their vaccines. Take prompt action should you notice your pet displaying symptoms. Always consult your veterinarian for further direction.
We will continue to keep the health and safety of your pet our number one priority. Please contact us should you have further questions.
Thank you!
