Dear Village Pet Spa Customers,
Recently one of our pet guests came down with an upper-respiratory ailment, which could be Canine Cough or Canine Influenza. We are also hearing from local vets that there is an increase in cases in our area, which one vet has tracked back to a local dog park. Although this type of bacterial infection or virus is usually mild, similar to a human cold, it is contagious to other dogs. Therefore, we are alerting our customers to watch for possible symptoms in your own pet. These symptoms can include sneezing, a “goose-honking” cough, and spitting up white, foamy phlegm.
Depending on your own pet’s immunity and resistance to illness as well as age, they may have very mild symptoms or a cough that can persist for days. If the symptoms are severe, then your dog should see your family veterinarian. Common treatments include: antibiotics, cough suppressants and in some cases, steroids.
There are steps that we take to prevent the spread of illness including vaccinations and stringent cleaning protocols where we use the same cleaning and sanitizing products as some local vets. We require that all pets be current with their Bordatella vaccine. We are also recommending pets be current with the Canine Influenza vaccine. Vaccines can lessen the severity of the illness; however, it may not prevent your pet from contracting all strains of bacteria or virus. We continue to make cleaning and sanitizing a priority throughout our facility and are taking heightened precautions.
If your dog shows any signs of this infection while boarding with us, there are steps that our staff has been trained to take in order to minimize the spread. This includes isolating symptomatic dogs from groups as well as possibly relocating them to a different area within our facility.
We will continue to take extra precautions to keep your dog happy and healthy at Village Pet Spa.
Sincerely,
The Village Pet Spa Team
